German mother and son held hostage in Iraq.

This is the full video of Hannelore Kadhim, a 61-year-old woman married to an Iraqi, and her son Sinana, 20 , who are being held hostage in Iraq, apparently by a pro-Taliban Afghani organization called the "Arrows of righteousness". They have issued a ten-day ultamatum, in which Germany is supposed to leave Afghanistan or face the execution of the hostages.

In the video, Kadhim, a senior employee of the Austrian Embassy in Baghdad, appeals in German to her relatives in Germany to mobilize the German press and to organize protests.

"Why should we be victims in a war that has nothing to do with us? . . . Germany was safe before we entered into the diabolical US alliance against what the US calls terrorism. . . I will be the first victim unless you respond to the demands of these men. I'm so scared -- we have just a couple of days. ... Do something!" The video is especially heartbreaking, as the mother breaks down in tears while speaking, and is comforted by her son, who grabs her hand and weeps.

Krause, who is married to an Iraqi doctor and has lived in Baghdad for years, was seized from her home on Feb. 6 along with her son.

(It would be nice to have a full translation available for people. Perhaps someone with a bit more skill in German than I possess could supply one that I can append to this post.)

The German government has recently repeated that it will not submit to pressure on the abduction. "The government is not open to blackmail," German Chancellor Angela Merkel said last month.

A poll commissioned last month by Der Spiegel found that 57 per cent of Germans want an immediate, complete withdrawal from Afghanistan, while only 36 per cent were in favor of continued deployment. I would suspect that things could get pretty ugly for Merkel if another video is released in the future, showing the execution of Mrs. Kadhim and her son.

Is this what war is all about nowadays, or is this what war has always been about?

UPDATE:  I have a translation on part of the Arabic at the end of the video:
"We are giving the German government another 10 days to begin withdrawing its troops from Afghanistan or we shall kill this criminal woman and her son who works in the Foreign Ministry of the government of (Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-) Maliki."
