Indeed, all the statements seem to indicate that the Iraqi president -- a Sunni -- wants to avoid having to make any kind of declaration about Saddam's execution at all. Given the current situation in Iraq, issuing such a statement could be the equivalent of issuing his own death warrant.
So, why would the U.S. government want to move up the execution? It can't have anything to do with the fact that sometime around New Year's Eve, there will be another, blacker thing to celebrate, will there? Of course, there is the possibility that they would like to see Saddam executed before the celebration of the Eid ul-Adha... but if that's the case, then why is the pushing on the timeline coming from the Americans?
The question is, do 3,000 needlessly dead U.S. servicemen and women mean anything to anyone anymore?
3,000... 5,000... 10,000... just numbers really, until it touches you personally.
That's a lot of boots, though.
