Pretty reasonable and straightforward request by the most prominent Republicans on the Armed Services Committee, you'd think... but apparently the Bush administration has let it be known that they are opposed to any such amendment, and that the president might veto the bill if the amendment were included. To make matters worse, McCain is doubtful whether there are enough votes to override such a veto.
In other words, not only is the Bush administration refusing to honor accepted human rights standards for the treatment of prisoners... they're apparently able to convince about 2/3rds of all Congressional Republicans to oppose them too. Obviously, some prominent Congressional Republicans only pay lip service to human rights.
Shameful. Disgraceful.
