After years of hearing nothing about his career, it looks like Gregg Araki has come out with a new movie, Mysterious Skin. (Here's the trailer!) which is currently making the rounds of the country in a *very* limited release. It's getting surprisingly good reviews for an Araki movie, too... most of his films get panned for being hopelessly depraved. NPR has an interview with Gregg Araki and Scott Heim, the author of the book the movie is based on.
As always, Gregg Araki's movies have an awesome soundtrack. In this case, it's an original score by Harold Budd and Robin Guthrie, in their first work together since the Cocteau Twins. Stunning. It sounds like an incredible forgotten relic from the recording sessions of their 1986 album "The Moon and the Melodies", alas, without Liz Frasier's vocals.
Mysterious Skin is going to be showing at the Osio 6 in Monterey and at the Red Vic in S.F. in August. I'm there. Definitely. As for the soundtrack, I'm going to order it today.
