The NAACP, Kerry, and Bush.

Today, John Kerry addressed the NAACP, giving arguably his strongest, most presidential speech of this campaign. Click here to watch his speech. (Windows media... Kerry's speech starts at about 1:18:00)

It's interesting to note some of the criticism that members of the NAACP have about George W. Bush... a lot of it is pretty valid.

Did you know that when the NAACP and other civil rights organizations spoke out against the confederate flag flying over South Carolina, Bush told them to "butt out" of the issue? Did you know that no senior member of the Bush administration has ever agreed to meet with the NAACP since the Bush administration came to power? Not Bush, not Cheney, not Ashcroft... not even Rice or Powell.

Bush and Powell both spoke to Al Jazeera, but they won't speak to the NAACP. A shameful state of affairs, considering that prior to this administration, the NAACP has met with representatives of every single U.S. president since F.D.R.

When Bush visited Africa, he spoke at Goree Island in Senegal, where many of the slave ships sailed from, enroute to America. He'll adress the old outrage of slavery back in Africa, but he's unwilling to address black Americans back in his own country.

It's too close to home, I guess.
