Perhaps the point of Thanksgiving is not only to keep in mind how thankful we should be when things are right, but also to keep in mind how easily and quickly things can go very, very wrong. When it does, there is usually nobody else to blame but ourselves.
In the case of us, we all share this space... this online town. It's still very small, with only about 11,000 active users, and yet it is very special. I am constantly surprised at the wonderful, talented, and emotionally honest people I have found here on Live Journal... I'm sure many of you have felt likewise. I can only say that the honesty, friendship, and acceptance I have found here at Live Journal has been a truly transforming thing in my life. You make me want to do better, try harder, be more open, sharing, giving, and be a better person. For that, I thank you all.
Still, as I said, this holiday comes with a warning... things can change. It's important for us to all realize that we all live here... there will be birth and death... there will be joy and sadness... love and anger... acceptance and scorn... kindness and hatred... this is real life. We're all going through this together.
We have a special opportunity. We all know how cold the world can be when we aren't here. I am telling you now... Live Journal is ours to shape as we so choose; it doesn't have to be like that. We can avoid being hurtful to each other... we can appreciate what others have to say without judging them. When we are hurt (either purposely or inadvertently), we can be forgiving of others and not let the problem escalate. If we do hurt someone, we can apologize and let the matter rest. We can also choose to accept apologies graciously.
I'm not here to argue for traditional values in a traditional way... but I think it is worthwhile to reflect on what all of us give to this community by sharing so freely of themselves. I want that... I don't want to lose anyone in the Live Journal community to disagreements that didn't have to happen. That is why I want to give you my pledge to try to treat you as well as I would want to be treated myself. Please forgive me when I fail...
I wish you all a warm, festive Thanksgiving!
"Look upon this moment! Savor it! Rejoice with great gladness... great gladness! Remember it always, for you are joined by it. You are one, under the stars...
Remember it well, this great victory, so in the years ahead, you can say 'I was there that night, With Arthur, the king!' For it is the doom of men that they forget..."
