"I have never, that I can recall, heard the subject of a permanent base in Iraq discussed in any meeting. The likelihood of it seems to me to be so low that it does not surprise me that it's never been discussed in my presence to my knowledge." - Donald Rumsfeld

Suure... I'm sure that when Wolfowitz brought it up, you were talking about having bases in Iraq for 40, 50 years tops. Just until all the oil has been pumped... and that's not permanent, is it?!

Of course, that was back when you thought the Iraqis would be dancing in the streets and the rest of the world would play ball and not stick you with the bill. I suspect that a big deal will be made of US troops returning, just in time for the next election cycle. Maybe you'll even find Bin Laden just in time, too... assuming you don't already know where he is.

It's interesting that there have been tons of pictures of a few dozen people dancing and throwing flowers, of staged destructions of Saddam statues, etc... but what about the largest gatherings of public sentiment, where over 10,000 Iraqis -- both Sunni and Shi'ite -- poured into the streets of Baghdad protesting the US presence in Iraq?

"Well, I don't remember it, but I agree with it." - Ronald Reagan, Iran Contra testimony.

Democrats lie about embarassing little things. Republicans "forget" the big things. Too bad that so many voters have bad memories too...
