The most critically acclaimed movie in America...

... is in Spanish, with subtitles, and it's utterly gorgeous looking. Oh... and it's hardly showing in any theatres at all.

That will change, however... this movie may have had a limited distribution at start, but it's on track to being a major box office success and serious Oscar contender.

Ang Lee's Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon -- a very big hit by any standard, let alone for a foreign-language film -- opened on 16 screens and earned $758.542 after four days. Guillermo del Toro's Pan's Labyrinth opened on 12.29 on 17 screens and, after four days, earned $779,427, averaging $44,148 per screen. Those kinds of numbers are something that a lot of theatres are going to want to get a piece of.

To me, it looks like a darker, more realistic, more adult version of the various 80's era muppety romps, like Labyrinth or The Dark Crystal... only with more there there.

It's coming to my local Camera Theatres next week, and I'm planning on getting a group together to see this fine piece 'o'cinema. If you're local and you'd like to get together as a group to see this, shoot me an email to let me know if you're interested.
