War hits home.

I've been doing a lot of searching lately for LiveJournal users in Iraq, as I've been interested in creating a community for those in Iraq for quite some time. It hasn't been easy finding them -- they're the proverbial needles in a very large haystack -- but there are more LJers in Iraq than you might think.

Today, while searching for people over in Iraq, I found out about Adam Estep. I heard about Adam a few months back... he was a young tank driver who came from San Jose, my hometown for over a decade, which is just down the road from here.

Adam died on April 29, 2004, when his Humvee was hit by a rocket-propelled grenade. He was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 5th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division. He was supposed to come home on April 12th, but his tour of duty was extended.

Adam's LiveJournal account was adeptus13, and appears to be the first LiveJournal user to be killed in Iraq. Let's hope he is the only one. His last post on LiveJournal has become a memorial to not only his memory, but also to his memories. It should be around a long, long time.
