Help support the rights of gays in America.

This post is making the rounds, but it's an important one, and well worth both voting on and cutting and pasting into your journal so others are aware.

Ultimately, it comes down to equality. Why should the amount a person pays in taxes be different just because their partner is of the same sex? Why are gays robbed of legal next of kin rights, and at the mercy of blood relatives during times of greatest crisis? How would you feel if your loved one's parents had the right to "pull the plug" on your spouse? How would you feel if you couldn't be present at the birth of your child, or attend the funeral of your partner? How would you feel if your partner died without a will, leaving you in financial chaos? These are just a few of the ways that gays are discriminated against regularly in this country everyday.

The American Family Association has decided to try and "prove a point" by having a poll on their website for folks to take about their opinion on gay marriage. They intend to present the results of this poll to the United States Congress in an attempt to instate a federal law against Gay Marriage.

It's obvious that they think that this poll will come out in their favor, and that the vast majority of people will vote to keep marriage for traditional couples only. However, this is LiveJournal, and we are FAR from traditional!

I ask you all to please visit and let your opinion be heard. It takes about 45 seconds, and it is SUCH an important topic. Whether you are gay or straight, conservative or liberal, your opinion matters, and you NEED to vote here.

While it's obvious that I am on the "pro gay marriage" side of the fence, I still want you to vote if you are against it. THe point here is to have a LEGITIMATE cross section of people voting in this poll. The only folks who were even made aware of it's existance were the peole on the AMAs mailing list and the people who happened to wander across their website. They have absolutely every intention of presenting this poll in the form of a petition to congress against gay marriage. I wonder if they will still present it when the YAYs outweigh the NEIGHs?

PLEASE let your voice be heard.
