What weapons of mass destruction?

Newsweek unearths a bombshell. Hussein Kamel, Iraq's highest ranking defector, told CIA, British intelligence officers, and UN inspectors in 1995 that Iraq has no weapons of mass destruction.

Our countries and the UN inspectors did not reveal this, because Saddam did not know how much Kamel had revealed, and the inspectors hoped to bluff Saddam into disclosing more information. All that remained were "hidden blueprints, computer disks, microfiches" and production molds.

Don't believe me? Well, it turns out that Fairness & Accuracy in Reporting has secured a complete transcript (pdf) of Kamel's interview.

I have for a long time said that Iraq, according to the UN's own accounting, only could possibly have 5% to 10% of their previous weapons of massed destruction. I have also mentioned that Iraq's recent excavations of the places where they buried their destroyed WMDs unearthed two bombs that appear to be remnants of biological weapons, which were buried for over a decade.

This also means that leading members of the Bush administration, including Dick Cheney, have been lying to the American people. In 2002, the vice president said "There is no doubt that Saddam Hussein now has weapons of mass destruction. There is no doubt that he is amassing them to use against our friends, against our allies and against us." Cheney then specifically cited Hussein Kamel as a source for this information.

Hussein Kamel returned to Iraq later, with a promise of foregiveness by Saddam. He was killed soon after his return, on suspicion of leaking Iraqi secrets.

I think I will spend a bit of today passing this information around to local newspapers, news websites, politicians, etc.

***Note - Further verification found! Scott Ritter, in an interview with NPR in 2002, reported that he had a transcript of Kamal's interview and that Dick Cheney was misleading the American public when he cited Kamal as being a source for proof that Iraq had WMDs.
