The bad and good of '70s television...

Talk about a painful blast from the past. Someone linked to The Star Wars Holiday Special on MeFi. I vaguely remember watching some of it around '78 or so... with special guests Beatrice Arthur, Harvey Korman, and Art Carney. I knew it sucked back then when I was about 11, but it really sucks now!

Oh god, was it really that bad? Make it stop! It feels like watching one of those old variety shows, only on the planet Kazook... a wookie version of the planet Endor.

Television was really, really sad in the 70's. I didn't like watching most of the things most kids watched back then... instead, I watched In Search Of, The Bugs Bunny / Road Runner Hour, The World At War, Cosmos, Flash Gordon, early Saturday Night Live episodes, Creature Features, M*A*S*H, Monty Python's Flying Circus, Ultraman, Doctor Who, Star Blazers, and Dave Allen at Large.
Add in premature exposure to Night Flight, The Young Ones, A Clockwork Orange, Rock n' Roll High School, and Yellow Submarine, and you got a pretty weird kid that was completely out of touch with the Def Leppard / Ratt / Journey / CHIPs kind of youth culture that really prevailed at that time... and for that, I am supremely grateful. ;-)
