What's white, in a trench, and disappears?!

Ice on Mars

How's it feel to be frozen?! Yeah, ice is nice!
This. This is ice. This is what happens to water when it gets too cold.

This. This is Kent. This is what happens to people when they get too sexually frustrated.

Now all we need is a rocketship, some vodka, vermouth, a cocktail shaker, an olive, and a martini glass, and Mars will be habitable by humans!

We can make hydrogen rocket fuel from the ice at zip over to Saturn next!

I think this is kinda interesting. I've suspected this for awhile, but I've always wondered how ice would formulate on the red planet.

Very cool.

Hey, can you remove this post on [info]sfbayarea?

http://community.livejournal.com/sfbayarea/1950044.html

The dude just joined LJ today and cross-posted this ad to various places. Not a really big deal, but not cool at all either.

Whatever you end up doing thanks in advance for looking into it!

Thanks babes!

In regards to the actual topic of your post, ;) I am VERY excited about what's been going on with the red planet! So long as that ice doesn't go to watering the first Martian golf course...

Everyone knows that the golf is better on the moon anyways. Less gravity.

I've got several commentaries about this issue over on my journal but suffice to say that I'm not all that pleased with the assessment NASA has made on the basis of color and evaporative properties. There are several crystallized substances including Methane which will evaporate at very low temperatures when exposed to air. Frankly a lot of the arguments for Mars have a tremendous amount of holes in them when it comes to chemistry, geology, and particularly biology. My favorite dumb comment out of NASA is "Water means Life." No, dumb dumbs, Water means bonded Hydrogen (most common element) and Oxygen (eight most common element). Life takes carbon or silicon, and probably no shortage of nitrogen given how amino acids are formed.

Oh and while we're on the idiocy of water and life, lets not forget which types of critters in on the earth live in waterless environments, and others which rely on sulfur not oxygen among other things. I swear they don't have a single damned decent biologist on staff for these missions.

Sorry to rant, but it's a serious pet peeve of mine to not acknowledge the various possibilities before discounting them all and asserting that it is indeed what you think it should be (wishful thinking anyone?) without chemical or physical analysis of the properties. Not saying it wasn't ice, I just think they're far to quick to associate it with ice without any empirical evidence. Intuitive logic doesn't cut it with science.

BTW I love Real Genius and own a copy.
