New Orleans still flooding.
Just completed the morning updates to my main post on the situation in New Orleans. There is a major breach in the 17th St. levee that is apparently flooding parts of New Orleans that weren't flooded before. One person said that it will continue until water levels in Lake Pontchartrain and the city are equal.

I wish I knew just how bad this could get. It concerns me that it might not be the hurricane that destroys New Orleans, but everything else that follows it.

At least Lake Pontchartrain is not very deep. Although it measures 40x24 miles, its depth is only 12 to 14 feet, on average. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lake_Pontchartrain

12-14 feet in depth doesn't sound like a lot unless you consider that the city is already 6' below sea level. I'm also concerned that water levels could be higher in the lake, since a lot of water was pushed into it (or rained into it) from the hurricane.

Exactly. The Times-Picayune ran a series about flooding potential. See http://www.nola.com/hurricane/?/washingaway/

Kind of like most people that die in a fire don't die from the fire, but from the smoke.

I didn't see any updates to your main post from the 30th. Are you still able to post today? How deep is the water around American Can? It's impossible to find information about specific neighborhoods, so any information you can post would be great. Thank you very much.

My post has been updated numerous times... it's on update 15, infact. Try holding down the shift key and hitting the reload button on your browser, as the original entry might be loading from the cache on your computer, rather than freshly loading it.

I think the problem is that all the updates are dated the 28th.

Thank you, [info]sqrfruit! They are!

And continuing to say thank you to you, [info]insomnia for doing all of this.

You're right! Fixed.

That's what I get from copying and pasting my formatting like I've been doing, rather than manually typing out the html. I guess I could use a client too, but they can be iffy at times.

Oh, geez:

Governor: Evacuate New Orleans
Tuesday, August 30, 2005

BATON ROUGE, La. — With conditions in the hurricane-ravaged city of New Orleans rapidly deteriorating, Louisiana Gov. Kathleen Blanco (search ) announced late Tuesday that people now huddled in the Superdome and other rescue centers need to be evacuated.

"The situation is untenable," Blanco said during a news conference. "It's just heartbreaking."

That's the right thing for her to say, both politically (she needs the fed money) and from a recovery standpoint. The situation isn't so much untenable as hard to work under. It's hard enough to fix everything in the first place, but it's extra hard if you have to force them to divert their limited ability to supply the city to supplying those who aren't working on fixing the problems at hand.

Can anyone confirm whether or not the Interstate-10 bridges over Lake Pontchartrain have collapsed? Some news sources are saying it's so, but I've not seen a photo.

Yahoo is showing this in their News Photos:

I don't know if that's Lake Pontchartrain; but, it's I-10.

Astrodome to take in Superdome people

They just broke into our local news (Houston) to announce that the Astrodome will take in the people from the Superdome. They said they'll be using four buses, and I don't remember how long they expect the transfers to take since I just woke up.

And either I don't remember, or they didn't mention the route they plan to take, since I-10 is down there.

While I'm glad they're being relocated, I hope they won't have them in the astrodome for long. Those people need something better than just being bounced around from stadium to stadium. If you were to tell me that I was being forced to leave one crowded stadium for another, I'd take the busride out, but hop out during the first bathroom break.

I agree that moving from one dome to another isn't the greatest way to live, but I guess it would be a good start as far as having better access to a phone to contact worried loved ones, plus some AC. I'd probably stick with the bus and dome for easier access to food. The local news is reporting some evacuees that made it before Katrina are starting to run low on cash after paying for gas and hotel fees.

But hopefully there'll be many that have loved ones living elsewhere that can arrange for them to stay with them, once they hear from them and they're at a place that allows travel.

Satellite Image of the flooding -- click on the image to see the full size. It may not be a lot but it may help some people figure out where the water is in relation to their homes and families.
