Class act!
Apple computers is using their entire homepage to raise funds for victims of the Indian Ocean tsunamis. Feel free to drop by, help out, and maybe buy something while you're there.

Other sites following suit include Amazon and Google. Microsoft, however, is still Microsoft. They'll probably do something eventually though... after their marketing department has had several meetings on the subject in order to best determine what empathy and human compassion should look like.

Remember 'Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy'? Microsoft are the Golgafrinchams -- the ones who couldn't decide what color to paint the wheel.

**UPDATE: Microsoft has finally decided what empathy and human compassion should look like.

"Pink??!" I thought.

I'm a little colorblind, so I asked [info]iceblink for her take on it. "Well, it's sort of peach, or flesh colored. Almost breast colored, really... The text is where the nipple should be." **

Microsoft used MSN to provide news on how to help tsunami victims. A friend of mine working at MS mentions that there's been donations made thru the company, but i don't have a number or details. Havent seen them make it public though, although one or two news articles do mention that Microsoft has spoken up about giving aid.

The Intel Foundation pledged a direct donation of $100,000 and have set up a matching contributions program for its employees to donate (dollar-for-dollar). Intel Involved in Malaysia are sending volunteers (employees) to help the victims of the tidal waves in the immediate region on Jan 1st.

Contributions from larger organisations tend to take longer because the philantropy programs tend to channel the money towards a particular type of aid/region rather than just pass the money on to the NGO without it being accounted for what it will be used for. It's bureaucratic, but i'd rather know that my money was accounted for than used to lined the pockets of directors of "charities".

Intel increased their contribution yesterday from US$100,000 to US$1 million.

It seems we're sending in an aircraft carrier group:

Supercarrier USS Abraham Lincoln dispatched to tsunami-stricken area

The Everett-based aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln has been ordered to head for the tsunami-devastated region to provide whatever assistance it can.

The ship, with its crew of 3,000 and an air wing of about 2,500, was on a port call in Hong Kong on Sunday when tidal waves struck 11 nations around the Indian Ocean.

Also, a five-ship fleet headed by the amphibious assault ship USS Bonhomme Richard has been directed to skip a port call in Guam and head for the stricken region.

But, even that big bunch of willing workers seems like so little in the face of this disaster.

Microsoft does matching-donation programs for its employees, who do tend to give quite a bit to charity. I believe an internal memo went out reminding employees of this, and how to do it, re: the disaster.

This article lists ways in which many US corporate giants - from drug companies to Starbucks - have responded.

The thing is, Microsoft could probably fund the whole damn relief effort themselves. Sometimes, I wish they would, just to show they could.
