Move along. Nothing new here.
Another Fallujah.
...this time in  Mosul.
Another generic white van.
Shuttling foriegners around.
Mushrooms of black smoke.
Death in the road.

White foriegners.
Dragged out of their vehicles.
Shot.
Mutillated.

Locals waving guns.
Dancing.
Laughing.
Curious children.

Wait. That's a different vehicle
with more dead foriegners.
And there's also a tanker left burning...
it's all today's news, though.

Really.
It  happens so often...
Who notices anymore?

No video.
No TV news.
They probably weren't Americans anyway.
We'll reserve our moral outrage.
For now.
Until we have to flatten
Some other city  too.
No doubt.
The end.

I recall that van from an image from Dec. 11th, 2004.

Mosul

"Gunmen wave their weapons near a burning van in the northern Iraq city of Mosul, December 11, 2004. Earlier in the day, insurgents detonated a car bomb alongside a U.S. military convoy wounding eight soldiers. U.S. troops fought a gun battle with the attackers before calling in air support and dropping a 500 lb. bomb on the site. Photo by Namir Noor-Eldeen/Reuters "

Which odd, since your link is clearly showing:

12/17/2004.

Hmm.

I notice.
I'm probably going to be sent there soon.
It'd be on par for this war so far...
and I'm probably going to loose more friends in the process.

I noticed....

Only because it was a mere block or two from me... The carnage, the charred bodies, we could smell the molten flesh from our outpost... And as if that wasn't enough, two roadside bombs went off not far from my vehicle as I left Mosul... Small arms fire? oh yeah, I forgot, yeah, 7.62's can penetrate kevlar and steel... we found that out the hard way... You're right, it is no longer just Americans at risk, and to see this brewing volcano starting to erupt so close, it so horrible, I can only hope and pray that I will survive amid the chaos, and that every trip I don't end up getting sick at the sight of the atroceties I pass through the uncivilized urban centre... And why would I want to watch CNN, or any type of news, I am tired of hearing, "Today in Iraq...."... Maybe it is better that no one sees what I have seen, could you live with it for the rest of your life?

If only it were that easy.

My dad was also a tanker... He was in Hungary when the Russians crushed them back in 1956. What he remembers most are the narrow streets and alleyways full of people trying to get away, and the Russian tanks crushing them like bugs.

He had constant nightmares for almost twenty years.
